Ane Brun Announces SONGS 2003-2013

32 song collection also contains rare and previously unreleased material…

Ane Brun | Songs 2003 – 2013 | 2xCD

The album Ane Brun – Songs: 2003 –2013 is a 2 x CD compilation album (31 songs), The track listing is in chronological order and includes songs from all of her eight albums. Its a standard jewel case CD

SONGS 2003-2013 overflows with some of Brun’s finest recordings, drawing upon work from each of her albums and therefore allowing for both studio and live versions of some of her most popular songs. It also contains a handful of rare tracks, including a gorgeous take on Arcade Fire’s ‘Neighbourhood #1 (Tunnels)’.
In addition, new material is present, amongst it a re-recording of ‘This Voice’ that reflects its live arrangement, and ‘Feeling Good’, a cover of the Newley/Bricusse classic made most famous by Nina Simone – and also often sung by Brun’s mother, a jazz singer and pianist in her own right – which is here recast as an acoustic sigh of pastoral optimism. An orchestral interpretation of ‘Don’t’ Give Up’ (taken from Peter Gabriel’s New Blood album) is also included, Brun taking the previously untouchable Kate Bush role and making it her own.

SONGS 2003-2013 charts Brun’s advance from the bewitching, frail acoustic compositions that made her name to the complex drama of her last album, It All Starts With One, via increasingly adventurous arrangements and an undeniably restless ambition to explore new musical opportunities. A decade in the making, it confirms ANE BRUN as an uncompromising and vital musical voice.

Brun says,

I kind of told myself early on to continue doing this as long as it gave me pleasure and it still does, more than ever. I’m still fingerpicking in front of my favourite TV series or with my morning coffee, just like I did ten to fifteen years ago. And it still fascinates me, just like it did when I wrote one of my very first songs, ‘Wooden Body’, sometime around the year 2000…

We Were Skeletons/Kids/Paxton/Florence & Libby | 4-Way Split | LP

Item Description: this record is reminiscent of a fire hall show from the 90’s. 4 bands from eastern PA that don’t sound alike, but still fit together in spirit. This record is less about catering to the niche fans of sub-sub-genres than it is about celebrating DIY, music, and friendship. WWS play frantic early 90’s emo for fans of Spirit Assembly, Palatka, etc. F&L is a 3 piece that sits somewhere between hardcore and jangly noisey punk. Kids bring the mosh, knuckle-scraping hardcore for fans of Ceremony or Trash Talk. Paxton fancied themselves something of an east bay pop punk throwback a la the Lookout! Records roster circa 94/95. 500 copies pressed on black vinyl. Each record comes with a 3-color screened cover, a 16-page half-size photocopied zine, and a handful of stickers

The rock/fusion power trio The Aristocrats – featuring Guthrie Govan on guitar, Bryan Beller on bass, and Marco Minnemann on drums – will release BOING, We’ll Do It Live! The Aristocrats At Alvas Showroom on December 10, 2012. The release will be in two formats: A standard-edition, 14-track, 2CD album, and a Deluxe Edition DVD + 2CD package featuring two additional bonus tracks, bonus audio from soundcheck, additional candid show footage, and bonus interviews with each band member. The DVD was pro-shot by six cameras, and the 5.1 surround audio mix was done by Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree. A 2-channel stereo mix is also available.

Formed practically by demand after a single raucously received set at the Winter NAMM Show in Anaheim, CA in January of 2011, the trio tracked their debut album The Aristocrats [Boing] just four months later, and released it that September to universal acclaim. But the core energy of the band from the start was their preternatural live chemistry, which became even more explosive during a year’s worth of worldwide touring.

“We’re all definitely proud of the studio album,” says bassist Beller, “but we were just getting to know each other when we cut it. Now that we’ve traveled the world together, we really get each other musically and personally. Honestly, we spend a lot of time making each other laugh to the point of tears. I think that really comes through live, the sense that we’re friends walking a high wire together musically, but also that, sometimes, we just choose to be extremely silly. Somehow it all works.”

BOING, We’ll Do It Live! was captured over two nights in June of 2012 at Alvas Showroom in San Pedro, CA, and features the entire Aristocrats repertoire, plus select material from the trio’s individual back catalogs, and a brand new, previously unreleased song, “Dance Of The Aristocrats”.

Acid Mothers Temple At Johnny Brenda’s

I wasn’t surprised to learn that one of the most recent projects by Acid Mothers Temple is inspired by Miles Davis (“Son Of A Bitches Brew”). When I was I senior in college, I took an introductory jazz course. A couple weeks into the class, we began covering fusion. Among the examples of this genre given by my professor was “Bitches Brew”, the track that shares the name of Davis’s famous experimental album. My professor explained the almost 27 minute piece at length before allowing the class to hear it. “I just didn’t get it”, he said repeatedly during what seemed to be a ten minute description of this specific Davis creation. Finally, my teacher momentarily put his lecture to rest and pressed the “play” button on his stereo remote.

“Is this what it’s like to be on LSD?” I asked myself, as I tried to navigate my mind around this instantaneous transportation into the musical world of Miles Davis. I had never heard anything like “Bitches Brew” before that day in class. It made me realize the enormity of room there is for the interpretation of any song. A musical piece that is completely incomprehensible to one person could make total sense to another. That’s the beauty of art. I’m reminded of this when listening to Acid Mothers Temple.

Tomorrow night at 9:00, this uniquely formed group of artists will take the stage at Johnny Brenda’s and grace Philadelphia with their matchless, musical flair. Acid Mothers Temple have produced many works in the last 15 years that embody a no holds barred approach in exploration of music. Like Miles Davis, the group’s talent is clearly showcased through their works, whether the average listener gets it or not. The most important thing to understand is how passionate Acid Mothers Temple are about the music they create. The doors for the show open at 8:00 and tickets are priced at $13.00.
