Neo-psychedelic communards Acid Mothers Temple is the brainchild of guitarist Makoto Kawabata, a veteran of the Japanese psych-rock scene. Inspired by the “inner space” explorations of ‘70s progressive and cosmic rock, and the more obscurantist spectra of ethnic and experimental music, AMT’s acid-soaked freak outs are particularly impressive for their scope–encompassing a far richer palette of sounds than typical “bleeding-into-the-red” heavy psych productions. ARE WE EXPERIMENTAL?–a spoof on Hendrix’s ARE YOU EXPERIENCED?–continues the group’s brain-melting explorations on 11 tracks of free-form sonic mayhem. From blistering Hawkwind-style guitar overload to spacey analog synth burbles to chaotic folk vignettes, AMT offers a little bit of everything for lovers of adventurous psychedelia.
